I'm considering moving to wordpress.com or when / if i get a job out of my "Software Development" formerly "Computer Applications" degree to pursue having my blog on a hosted site, i'll be definitely be staying away from a .ie domain, I never want to deal with the IEDR c*%$s again shudder.

Eircom/Broadband
I see Babcock and Brown have allegedly come out and admitted that yes Broadband in Ireland is the worst in europe. According to figures there are 400 dsl enabled exhanges in Ireland, whereas there are some 1100 exchanges in the country. Maybe we will see some progress in this area with the takeover of Eircom by B&B, and maybe I can finally get (decent) Broadband in Ballygarvan.

Shannon Anti War protesters
I can't believe those anti-war protesters got of the hook for damaging the plane. The arrogance of these people annoys me, it seems to me that these people are well funded and have too much time on their hands. The movement of military traffic through Shannnon provides much needed jobs. Lets be honest without these flights Shannon would loose out on millions of euro and countless jobs would be lost. It's obvious that these people don't depend on Shannon to provide for their familes, so fuck off up back up the tree you came from.

Writely
Writely is an online word processor by a company called Upstartle. Upstartle is now part of the mighty google family. After been on the waiting list for ages i went in search of a place to get an invitation and finally found this site http://pnut.kicks-ass.org/gsheet/. It takes about a day for them to get back to you. I started using it straight way and I have to say it's extremely good as it allows you to share and collaborate documents online. It also allows you to make .pdf or ms word versions to your local hard drive if you chose to . It's well worth checking out if you're interested.

Middle East
A couple of things spring to mind over the current tensions in the middle east,
1. Israel does whatever it wants to do and America will stand by it and Britain to a lesser extent. We all know civialians die in wars but when an occupying force takes control of an area are they not obliged to provide humanitarian assistance to the civialians so far from news coverage (and i've watched a lot of news coverage) i fail to see israel taking responsibilities, which goes to further fuel the already hostile relations israel has with its Arab neighbours. But then again it seems israel doesn't give a damn what anyone thinks about them.
2. The U.N is powerless.
3. Current U.S administration is guthless and afraid to stand up to Israel, is it two afraid of the jewish lobby in America? it would seem that way.

Laziness
I tell you it's a disease so it is, I'm not working at the moment and boy have I gotten into a rut, today I got out of bed at half one, granted I didn't go to bed until three as i was reading "Debt of Honour" by the great Tom Clancy. Btw the Israeli goverment could do with reading "The Sum of All Fears" they might learn a thing or two or maybe not.

World Cup

The world cup is well under way and having watched every game so far, the most impressive team has to be Italy, followed by argentina. What has impressed me is the vast improvement in quality of all teams in the tournament so far with the possible exception of Toga. The emergence of African teams has been good to see, they are no longer the wipping boys of the tournament. Over the next two world cups you can see that the quality of these teams will increase further. It does concern me that while we see these countries as been third world countries, there is heavy investment in football in these countries by external sources we in Ireland may well fall behind in the interantional pecking order, it's clear to me that our domestic structure needs to be looked at and invested in so as to encourage younger palyers and improve the pool of players that we can select at national level from our domestic league, this isn't going to happen overnight and will take years but it needs to be done, the bullet needs to be bit on restructuring the game in ireland.

Charles Haughey

No doubt the passing of Charles Haughey will bring up all the Moriarty Tribunal shenanigans and rightly so, he may well have ended his life in jail if the full truth of what he got up to came out. He had the potential to become one of Irelands greatest leaders but his penchant for wealth and power was his downfall.

Roy Keane

Roy Keane retired yesterday. Amongst the excitement of the world cup few will have paid any attention to it. We all have our opinion of him, hero or villian. My question is why did he go to celtic besides being a life long celtic fan, was it really worth it, 28 appearences and 1 goal is hardly a record to go out on. Surely he must have known when he was forced out of united that he only had a season or so in him, would his time have been better spent with his family and thinking about his future rather than slogging it out in the shit hole that is the spl and celtic. It was sad and somewhat pathetic to watch him play after years of great play at united......... ah well.

Dave Collins to Manchester United
It has been reported in the Manchester Evening Press that David Collins is on his way to Man Utd. This contradicts the rumours circlulating around London that he was on his way to Chelsea under Jose Mourinho. Mourinho has reportedly seen Collins in action on a recent trip to Cork. Collins is a colourful character whose of field antics have made him more famous than his playing career. We can only assume Mourinho sees Collins as a replacement for the increasingly annoying Makelele.

Windows V Apple
I've been a user of windows OS for years, along with a few different linux distros. I hear constant bashing about windows in the media and on the web but, i have to say from personal experience, I have absolutely no problems with it. It's great for games, music, video, development work, general use....... etc. It has a few faults but all operating systems do but over the last few years gotten progressively better. We hear a lot about security problems with it but from my experience i've never had any problems with it.

I've never liked Apple for the simple reason that they seem to do everything in their power to keep their products as isolated from other products as they can. Even now having switched to intel architecture they've made it difficult for it to be used with Windows Operating system.

What apple have to be commended on is their product design skills, in particular their imac range but on the other hand i think their ibook/macbook pro range is quite ordinary.

Cork Pub Guide

This is my lazy ass guide to pubs in Cork. Feel free to comment on your own favourites and i will add them to the blog. Bare in mind I haven't been to every pub in cork so your help will be appreaciated. And as i was writing this i realised it has turned into a bashing for a lot of places, it's all true though, during the summer I will structure this better in headings, and do a section on drink prices, but it's a start.

J.D Styles: Scobe hole, sloppy pint. the smoke room is located at the back of the pub and the smoke just comes straight in.

Flahertys: Nice pub, more suited to those over 35-40. Very good service in there.

Mulligans: One if my favourites, small, easy to get served when it's busy.

Clarion Hotel: Avoid at all cost. Dickhead bouncers, Unbelievably slow service. great toilets though.

Old Oak: Great for watchin footy games. Good service, crowd gets a bit old late in the night.

The Ovens: Not a bad spot, only been there the once so can't write too much about it. had problems getting served at the bar, but it was arond christmas time when i was there so that may have had something to do with it.

Long Valley: Lovely pub, very nice toasted sandwhiches (not the best in Cork though)

An Brog: Smelly, dingy, toilets usually a disgrace. Lots of talent usually there though!

Qube: Late bar, reasonable entrance price.

Nancy Spains: Not the same as what it was before, gobshites in charge now, and what's with the smoking room. Used to be a great spot, avoid at all cost.

Tom Barrys: Lovely old pub, great beer garden.

Spailpin Fanac: Great place, lovely atmosphere, lovely interior.

Long Island: Disgracefully slow service, poser palace.

Preachers: Great spot, small though, some good music played in there.

Reardons: Big, toilets usually clean, weird smell in there though kinda gets up my nose. Very good service most of the time.

Havanna Browns: Great during the summer, clean, well run. 14 euro (may have gone up since y last visit) a bit on the pricey side.

Mercury Lounge: Good if your goin out in a group, relatively good service, toilets very untidy though.

Costigans: Used to be a favourite of mine until the smoking room went in and it was extended, now it's always far to packed at night so much so it's nearly impossible to move - very uncomfortable.

Redz: Used to hate the place as a club, kinda like it in its current form.

Le Cheile. Very nice place, seems to me like a place for couples, nice clean toilets.

The Coal Quay. No complaints, good service, clean toilets. Had a great night in there a while back.

The Savoy: A kinda cool inside structure, nothing bad to say about it.

Mick McCarthy
A quick word on the legend that is Mick McCarthy. It's clear to me that anyone in charge of Sunderland this season would have struggled. And would someone tell me wheres the sense in a club getting rid of a manager with 10 games left in the season, whoever in Sunderland made that decision needs a kick in the backside. I think the Sunderland board need to take a long hard look at themselves before they make their next big decision - I'm talkin to you bob murray.

Currently working on a J2SE application to send information messages to a Mobile Phone with bluetooth enabled along with a JSP registration end. Currently able to listen for devices and detect devices using the Avetana bluetooth library.

Ballygarvan Development

John F Supple have propsed a 181 unit development in Ballygarvan. Ballygarvan is a small village 5 miles from Cork City and roughly 2 miles west of Cork Airport.

Their draft proposal consists of the following:
15 detached houses
44 semi-detached houses
52 town houses
32 maisonettes
38 apartments.

The village currently has no bus service. Anyone wishing to get a bus to Cork City Centre must walk roughly a mile to Bowen's Cross on the main Cork to Kinsale road. Walking to this bus stop can often be very dangerous as the road after the church is very narrow with two blind corners. I have had some close calls walking on this road and I'm not the only one. Many drivers using this road have little regard for people walking on this road. With the increase volume of traffic using this road, it's my belief that it's only a mater of time before someone is seriously hurt.

The village currently has 1 primary school which is nearing breaking point in terms of numbers at the moment. If the plans for the new development get the go ahead without a new school being built the school will not be able to cater for a large influx of new children.

A 30km/h zone exists through the village but like the village of Ballinhassig a lot of drivers don't give a damn about this limit particularly truck drivers who blatently disregard this limit. This factor coupled together with the reckless parking of the primary school children parents during school drop off and pick up times is a recipe for disaster. I have often seen cars parked on the actual stop line on school road making it impossible for people driving up this road to safely turn left or right.

The village has no fixed line broadband access. Broadband is provided via a wireless connection. It strikes me as being completly daft that a village so close to the Airport Business park which will soon play host to Amazon.com that fixed line broadband isn't available.

Waste treatment exists in the Brideview Development trea across from the Church. This treatment plant caters for the people living in the Brideview development, when the John F Supple development goes ahead no doubt a second plant will have to be developed to cater for that, if proper planning had been done a centralised plant could have been developd to cater for the village as a whole.
